If you do one thing today, it should be this…you MUST check out what some of the writers at GeekDad have pulled together in remembrance of Jim Henson’s passing 20 years ago.

I grew up watching obsessing over Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street, and when I got a bit older I would watch The Muppet Show reruns on Nick at Night. I still get teary-eyed when I think about hearing the news that he had passed away. You know when people ask which five people you’d have over for dinner, alive or dead? It’s always so hard to answer in that moment, but I will always have a spot saved for Jim Henson.

All of the videos from his memorial in 1990 are posted over at GeekDad, but here’s a favorite of mine with Big Bird singing It’s Not Easy Being Green. These are probably some of the most touching and meaningful moments you’ll ever see, so please, please, please check them out.

This man was brilliant. The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are two of my favorite films.

You know, I feel like I should go back and watch both. I was afraid of them when they first came out, but I’m sure I’d appreciate them more now. You always have the best movie ideas for me, Des!

Great post! Love your blog. :)
Me too on growing up with this stuff–I can’t believe it has been 20 years since he passed away! We used to sing all those Muppet Movie songs in grade-school chorus and I still remember every word!
Do you think the doozer sculptures were made out of sugar? I think that’s why the fraggles always ate them…

Randall! I’m so glad you came by, that makes me so happy! It’s so funny that you mention the Doozer sculptures; I was trying to figure out how to get that in the post. I used to love how the Fraggles would eat them and always wondered what they were made of. It must have been sugar. That really is one of my favorite memories. That and my dad using a cable scrambler so we could get HBO so I could actually watch Fraggle Rock. Ha!
