It doesn’t happen often, but there are occasions where I miss some really cool stuff on TV…like this for example. You may or may not know that new disco makes my heart race, so this right here is everything I love about dance music. Could Chromeo be any more awesome? I think not. Oh how I love the addition of the strings and the Robert Palmer-esque girls. This has me wishing for Friday night.

[Thanks to my awesome bro for sending it and making my day.]

Hip-hop violin

Last Thursday night I had the chance to go to a party hosted at the Redwood Room at the Clift Hotel in downtown San Franciso. It’s a gorgeous bar that is paneled from floor to ceiling with wood from a single redwood tree, and the original art deco chandeleirs and sconces from 1933 still adorning the walls and ceilings. As a cool contrast from the richness of the wood there are digital frames projecting portraits of people with the eyes that follow you throughout the room.

The night was glamourous and luxurious, and hence, was a great spot for people-watching. But even with all of the eye candy, we were there for the music. We all know I have a thing for a good DJ, but I also love the symphony and I try to go a few times a year. On this night Inka 1 and violinist Paul Dateh came to perform a joint set of smooth hip-hop beats accompanied by the classical sounds of the violin. It was bananas! When they transitioned into Ghostface Killah’sCherchez la Ghost oh my god, I was in heaven…two of my favorite musical genres rolled into one. Add a glass or two of bubbly and there’s the cherry on top. It was a great night.

Check out the video below of the guys in the studio, it really is great stuff.

New Mix: SlimeBall

One of my favorite things to do is to go to work with my Lova and people watch from the DJ booth. It’s great fun and there’s always something interesting to see when you have girls in too-tight dresses and alcohol involved. Listening-in on requests from people is also an interesting past time; I won’t go into details in this post, but there is an etiquette to making requests, and most do not follow it.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a girl come up and ask “Umm, when are you going to play something that’s on the radio?” (This usually during a remix of a popular radio tune.) Song selection aside, this has to be one of the lamest things I’ve ever heard. Sweetie, there’s more to life than what you see on TV and what you hear on the radio. To be fair, I admit that I do love a good cheesy pop song, but to limit yourself only to things that are easily accessible is a crime.

So on that note, if you’re looking for something deeper than radio playlists of the same 20 songs, I present to you the club DJ’s answer back to all of the BS requests for Ke$ha and Miley Cyrus: Bass-heavy club music at its best, this is what dance music is.

Be sure to listen out for Starkillers (#5), Empire of the Sun (#7), Autodidakt (#9), and Lauren Flax – Richie Panic & UFO remix (last track).

Disco Suite Volume 1

Here’s a new mix for your listening pleasure. I’ve always been a fan of disco music, and I shared my embarrassing story of calling in song requests on Saturday nights before; but now there’s a whole new class, and even if I had to call-in there’d be no need to be ashamed. This mix showcases the best in modern disco music…all of the best parts of classic disco without the cheesiness. Each of the tracks are great, but you MUST check out the ones by Empire of the Sun, Flight Facilities (my fave!), and 40 Thieves.

M.I.A Born Free

Holy shit, M.I.A is back with a crazy new sound and her first single just hit the internets! It’s epic, and the video is UNREAL, like in the sense that I’m still shaken and may not be able to sleep tonight. It’s intense, scary, obscene, grotesque, and disturbing–but it’s also soul-stirring at the same time. If you’ve seen Battle Royale, you may get a sense of what I’m talking about.

WARNING: This video is very graphic and disturbing. It’s NOT for everyone and it’s definitely not suitable for work.
